Being farmers, we don't often get away much in the summer months, but instead like to take a few days in late autumn.  Not quite the same as a summer vacation, but getting away from the farm and it's constant work is still a wonderful (and much-needed) break for all of us.  Sadly, we hadn't done this since Dooter was born, caught up with farm busy-ness that went straight into Christmas busy-ness, and also not sure how Yummy would manage in a strange bed, since she is now FAR too big for our travelling playpen.
For the past several weeks, Dooter has been transitioning from two naps to one, and I've been learning that despite all my attempts to control his sleep habits, I just can't make him sleep more than he wants to!  Instead of frustrating me to no end and causing me untold stress, I've managed to let it go and accept that he has different sleep needs than his older sister had at his age.  I've decided that as long as he does get a little nap in the day and a regular bedtime at night, he will be fine!  ANYway, what this all means for me is that I get a little more freedom for getting out and about, and a drive to Cypress Hills was totally manageable.
We spent a lovely few days exploring the forest, which is so different from our hilly prairie home.  Yummy's excitement made our simple getaway seem extra special,  "I just LOVE our new Cypress Hills home!"

We walked in the forest, discovering tracks from deer and rabbits,

played at a frozen playground,
warmed our toes by the fireplace, read books, played games.  I made Mr. Man take a photo of this rare cuddling moment with my un-cuddly daughter.  It happened!!

Of course it wasn't perfect -my bed was hard as nails and our rooms were so close together we could hear Dooter's wake-up call at exactly 5am, "Daddy??"  Both meant not much sleep for me and Mr. Man.

But spending a few solid days with the kids was wonderful for all of us.  Yummy slept better than she did at home, surprising and delighting me.  And Dooter mastered going up and down the stairs to the upper level of our condo.

Now we are home again, thankful for our comfortable beds, refreshed from enjoying some family time in a beautiful place.

What was your last family vacation?  I'd lovely to hear your favourite part!
